    Mr. K: Home Again

Mr. K was admitted to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach after experiencing a severe headache on January 2. He was found to have suffered a stroke and was put on mechanical ventilation.

Unable to recover fully in the short-term acute setting, Mr. K was transferred to Kindred Hospital Charleston on January 21. Upon admission to Kindred, Mr. K was evaluated by our physicians and interdisciplinary team of specialists, therapists and nurses. A treatment plan tailored to Mr. K’s complex medical needs was developed and implemented immediately. His physicians and therapists worked to wean him from the ventilator. The rehabilitation team started a course of treatment focusing on regaining the functioning impaired by his stroke. Mr. K’s right-side weakness slowly began to improve as his strength and sensation returned.

Having made immense progress in his recovery and no longer requiring high intensity medical care, Mr. K was transferred to Roper Rehabilitation Hospital to continue his therapy. He and the therapists from Roper Rehabilitation Hospital made the trip across the street to visit the staff at Kindred Hospital and demonstrate how he was continuing to improve.

Mr. K is now at home with his family in Myrtle Beach. Kindred Hospital Charleston’s success is apparent in stories like this as well as in our quality scores – our patients and families rate our quality of care at 91.6 percent.
