    Jane: Recovery on Several Levels

Jane fell at home on March 17 and was taken to a short-term acute care hospital for evaluation. Upon examination, doctors found Jane in the throes of an aggressive metastic cancer. She underwent surgery to remove the cancerous tissue and was subsequently on mechanical ventilation.

Post-surgery, Jane experienced multi-organ failure and was referred to Kindred Hospital Charleston for continued care. Her husband Lou toured Kindred Hospital before consenting and Jane was admitted on April 25.

Upon admission to Kindred, Jane was evaluated by our physicians and interdisciplinary team of specialists, therapists and nurses. A treatment plan tailored to Jane’s complex medical needs was developed and implemented immediately.

The respiratory team began ventilator weaning. Her dietitian worked with her to improve her nutrition and Jane began to gain back some weight lost during her hospitalization. Her nephrologists worked to regain her kidney function. Her wound care surgeon and nurses were able to successfully treat the wound she acquired from breast surgery as well as preventing any new wounds.

Jane’s husband stayed with her through her time at Kindred Hospital until her discharge home on June 6. “Coming to Kindred Hospital saved her life,” says Lou.

Kindred Hospital Charleston’s success is apparent in stories like this as well as in our quality scores – our patients and families rate our quality of care at 91.6 percent.
